Ronnie Fieg x Asics Gel Lyte 3 & Gel Lyte 3.1 - Super Green

10 years ago I began working on my first collaboration with Asics on a silhouette that impacted my life in a major way – the Gel Lyte 3. The fact that this 10th anniversary aligned with Kith’s 5-year anniversary made it apparent that the Gel Lyte 3 had to be a major part of our celebration. While brainstorming on how to do this, my team continued to push me and push me...to release the Super Green. I went back-and-forth with the idea, as this shoe is very significant to me. Originally created as a charity effort to support impoverished Haitian youth, then selectively given to employees of the brand as a sign of membership, this shoe had become something bigger. So after much deliberation, I decided that the only way it made sense to release them was to do it in the best way possible. That is why I decided to have these pairs handmade in Japan. The craftsmanship in Japan is unmatched globally, and I knew they could deliver the highest quality production Gel Lyte 3 ever. To be able to let people experience this shoe in the best way possible, even better than how it originally was, makes me very happy.

Releasing alongside the Gel Lyte 3 is the first of three unicorns to release this year – the Gel Lyte 3.1. The 3.1 is an idea I have had for a very long time. It is the evolution of what I wanted to see Asics’ lifestyle product become. As I get older and become more mature, I want my product to reflect accordingly. Going into this, I knew it was going to be a love/hate situation for consumers due to how sentimental the Gel Lyte 3 has become to people, including myself. I don’t know if I would respect if someone else did it, but I believe I have earned the respect of the Gel Lyte 3 enough to evolve it to the next level in a very limited once-in-a-lifetime fashion. And like many of you, I was and will always be skeptical of fusion silhouettes, however, the Gel Lyte 3 is an anomaly because its design was so ahead of its time in 1990. To see this upper mesh so seamlessly with Asics’ top-of-the-line performance tooling today simply proves how timeless of a silhouette the Gel Lyte 3 is. I want people to understand my motive behind this, and this is the honest to God truth – in 2016 I believe we need to push boundaries and push the envelope. Just like when I reintroduced the Gel Lyte 3 in 2007, there were not many fans of the shoe back then. Nobody likes change, but change is inevitable. So the 3.1 represents a progressive approach when working with Asics on presenting new products and silhouettes to the world. This will be the beginning of a new chapter for a relationship that is greatly appreciated and one that is not taken for granted.

There will be 700 pairs of both the Gel Lyte 3 and 3.1 produced globally. There will be three different renditions of the 3.1 released throughout this year (with this being the first), and after that, they will disappear forever and the silhouette will never be seen again. The Gel Lyte 3 will exclusively release at Kith, while the 3.1 will release later at United Arrows & Sons Harajuku, Colette, Slam Jam Milan, and Dover Street Market London. Each store will only stock 24 pairs.

Both will release on Saturday, May 21, at Kith Manhattan, Kith Brooklyn, and KithNYC.com. The Gel Lyte 3 will retail at $250 USD and the Gel Lyte 3.1 will retail at $200 USD. There will be two opportunities to secure a pair of either model prior to the official public release – one will be for in-store purchase and the other will be for online. However…both will be surprises as a reward to our loyal customers. Pay close attention to our stores and website early next week to not miss your chance.
